Heritage Project

Summary of Activity:

Students will create a family crest based on several unique qualities in their families. Students will also type up a 5-paragraph essay explaining their choices. Students will present their crest to the class and explain their choices.

Content for the four sections of the Crest:

  1. Flag, map, or symbolic animal connected to your family heritage

  2. A symbol that represents/defines your family (past or present symbol) see symbol handout (could be a hobby, favorite past time, talents, etc.)

  3. Food that is connected to your heritage (picture or drawing) or print out (could relate to a holiday tradition)

  4. Meaning of last name or first name or why their first name was chosen or another symbol representing your birth order or initials.

Write a family motto.

If you can find your traditional motto, you might want to use it.  If you want to make up your own, limit it to approximately 5 to 10 words that best express your family identity.  The family motto is usually written across the top or bottom of the shield and crest in a banner.  The motto is a phrase meant to describe a motivation or intention.  Write the motto in the banner.  Example: Reach for the stars, Never give up

Instructions

  1. Use the crest and banner outline provided.  you may trace this outline on a 11X8 piece of paper (construction paper, tagboard) DO NOT use binder paper.  Outline the crest and banner on your paper, first in pencil, then in marker.

  2. Divide the crest into four sections, using a ruler.  As with the outline, complete this process first in pencil then, once you are satisfied with your line placement, go over your lines in marker

  3. Explore and consider the meaning of different common crest symbols before you start designing your crest.  See the resources provided.  Each line and shape on a crest has a meaning.

  4. Select a color scheme for your crest.  While you will likely incorporate a number of colors into your design, you should still select one dominant color to fill the majority of your crest.  Decide upon a color by consulting information about crest meanings, or select a color that holds significance to your family

  5. Fill each quadrant of your image with a different symbol to represent your family.  you can exercise your artistic skill and draw these symbols, or you can use pictures from magazines or the internet to complete this process.

  6. Write your family motto on the banner.

  7. Type an essay explaining the symbolism and pictures.  Describe the crest by section.  Why did you pick this symbol or picture over others?  Also, include why the motto represents you.  This essay will be used (NOT read directly!) when sharing your crest and motto with the class. (see packet for details)
